Hematopoiesis from Pluripotent Stem Cell

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) can give rise to all blood cell types including T cells, B cells, erythrocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and granulocytes. The HSC differentiates into lineage-committed progenitor cells depending on the presence of specific cytokines. For example, GM-CSF helps to direct differentiation into the myeloid lineage. From there, sequential differentiation through various progenitor populations drives maturation into fully mature blood cells. Each step of this process is driven by unique cytokine or growth factor signals.
