Gamma-Delta T cells

Gamma-delta T cells are a small subset of T cells that express a unique TCR complex made of one γ chain and one δ chain. Unlike the αβ-TCR, the γδ-TCR recognizes lipid antigens and doesn’t require antigen presentation by MHC molecules. Gamma-delta T cells function in the adaptive arm of the immune system and rearrangement of the TCR genes contributes to a memory phenotype. Interestingly, the TCR and other pattern recognition receptors on the surface of the cell recognize molecular patterns on pathogens and contribute to the innate arm of the immune system. Roles for γδ T cells have been discovered in wound healing, tissue repair, regulation of effector T cells, and mediating natural killer cell cytotoxicity.
