Synapses contain hundreds of proteins that impact higher level functions like movement, cognition, and memory. Proteins like Neuroligin-1, SALM, and SynCAM are involved with adhesion, helping to create synapses and improve communication between neurons. Ionotropic receptors form a single pore that spans the membrane. Activation of the receptor by neurotransmitters causes the pore to open and allows the direct passage of ions such as Ca2+ through the membrane. Ligands such as glutamate are excitatory, whereas other ligands like GABA are inhibitory.
