Western blot of purified anti-SERPING1 (C1INH) antibody (clone BL28552). Lane 1: Molecular weight marker; Lane 2: 3 µg of human plasma; Lane 3: 5 µg of human plasma. The blot was incubated with 0.2 µg/mL of the primary antibody overnight at 4°C, followed by incubation with HRP-labeled goat anti-mouse IgG (Cat. No. 405306). Enhanced chemiluminescence was used as the detection system.

Description

SERPING1, also known as C1-inhibitor, is a member of the serpin superfamily. Research on SERPING1 has revealed its major function as a check point for the spontaneous activation of the complement system. SERPING1 binds to and inactivates Complement 1r (C1r) and Complement 1s (C1s), which in turn block the proteolytic cleavage of downstream complements C2 and C4. SERPING1 protein expression is upregulated during inflammation. SERPING1 is also a risk factor of Hereditary angioneurotic edema, which is caused by uncontrolled auto-activation of the complement system. Recent studies have shown that SERPING1 may also be involved in macular degeneration.
