In a dark world, pathogens lurk around every corner, trying to end the universe as cells know it. In these times of hardship, the body turns to the Guardians of Biology. The Guardians come from all corners of the body from the nebulous synapse-laden world of the brain to the crowded streets of the bone marrow. Learn more about each of these heroes below and what they’re doing to defend you.

Hou-T-ini
CD4+ T Helper Cell

Hou-T-ini prides itself on its flexibility. It’s able to conjure up a variety of cytokines depending on his mood and the needs of the immune system. Hou-T-ini is integral to the support of other immune cells, as it can help them develop and mature. It can also amaze them with its amazing bag of tricks, including the Disappearing Bacterium and Levitating B Cell acts.

Marc Antibody
B Cell

Marc Antibody believes in order and regimen above all else. Its mental fortitude and discipline allows it to crank out antibodies when the need arises, binding up its enemies and making them easier targets for its fellow warriors. It won’t rest until the enemy falls before it.

Grant
Granulocyte

Some say Grant overreacts, particularly during the Spring allergy season. But Grant will not be deterred. Grant’s favorite pastime is capturing and stopping immunogens outside of what the typical immune cell comes into contact with, whether that’s pet dander, pollen, or a nasty parasite. So while it may give you the occasional runny nose, Grant is happy to release defensive granules to stop pathogens in their tracks.

The Professor
Neuron

The Professor finds learning to be so exciting that it makes its synapses practically crackle with excitement. The Professor takes its job seriously and controls higher level functions like memory, movement, and even the regulation of happiness (with the right neurotransmitters). Though it tries to hide it, the Professor is quite proud of its jobs and sometimes sees itself as more important than the other members of the group.

Sergeant N.K.
Natural Killer Cell

The Sergeant intimidates a lot of cells just with its name, so it often prefers to just be called “Sarge”. Sarge enjoys its work every bit as much as Marc Antibody. It regularly patrols the area and checks immune cells to make sure they’re carrying the proper surface marker identification. Should it encounter an enemy, Sarge is armed to the teeth with an artillery of deadly granzymes and interferons.

Dan Dritic
Dendritic Cell

Dan fancies itself as a private investigator. It isn’t afraid to get out and do some field work and pick up suspicious looking perpetrators. Dan then interrogates, breaks down, and displays the antigens on its surface. It will then wander down to the local lymph node to share its gathered information, potentially bridging the arms of innate and adaptive immunity.

Mac
Macrophage

Although Mac bares some similarities to its best pal, Dan, it loves one thing more than anything else: finding and eating pathogens. Mac specializes in phagocytosis and busting up pathogens into tiny little pieces. It can show its prizes to other immune cells, but Dan seems to outclass it in this regard. Oh well. Mac is more than happy to go back again and again to the antigen buffet to load up.
