The ubiquitin pathway can regulate axon growth, signal endocytosis, and contribute to synaptic plasticity. Ubiquitin is also a common marker for neurodegenerative pathologies. For example, ubiquitin staining can detect amyloid plaques, which cause synaptic dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease.
