Sonic Hedgehog and New Recombinant Proteins
BioLegend has a variety of new recombinant proteins for bioassay studies. Among our new products, we focus on Sonic Hedgehog (SHh). Hedgehog proteins in general are crucial for organ development. SHh in particular is associated with embryonic development of the limbs, lungs, gut, and more. SHh has been implicated in angiogenesis and could be a therapeutic avenue for limb repair. Kanaya et al. explored the effects of SHh on mobilized stem cells for cell therapy.
Adapted from Kanaya et al. 2015. Stem Cell Res. 14:165. PubMed
Stem cells can be mobilized from the bone marrow following G-CSF binding. Treatment of these cells with SHh and activation of its pathways induced a number of effects. These mobilized stem cells produced cytokines and growth factors that promoted angiogenesis. The cells also showed the ability to differentiate into endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells, possibly through TGF-β and Smad signaling pathways. This could allow for vascular regeneration in ischemic tissues. This demonstrates exciting potential for those dealing with ischemic diseases and cell transplantation therapies.
