BioLegend sponsored Webinar: Cancer Neoantigens as Targets for Natural and Therapeutic Anti-Tumor Responses
Date: Wednesday, October 11, 2017

Time: 02:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time
Register Now on Biocompare.com
Speaker
Dr. Robert D. Schreiber
Andrew M. and Jane M. Bursky Distinguished Professor
Department of Pathology and Immunology
Washington University School
Summary
The immune system is capable of controlling and shaping developing cancers by the process of cancer immunoediting. It can also be used therapeutically to treat a variety of established cancers. Several immunotherapeutic modalities have been approved by the FDA and include monoclonal antibody blockade of immune checkpoints as well as adoptive transfer of tumor-specific T cells into cancer patients. While these approaches are showing unprecedented effects on a subset of cancer patients, they nevertheless are effective in only a subset of patients with any particular cancer and are not without risk of adverse events.

In other words, we still need to improve cancer immunotherapy by making it more effective, more specific, and safer.

Mutant proteins in a tumor can function as tumor-specific mutant antigens (neoantigens), and some of these can induce immune control of cancer. This webinar addresses how mouse and human cancers have been used to identify therapeutically useful tumor neoantigens; how these neoantigens can form the basis for personalized cancer vaccines; and what additional forms of therapy are needed to optimize the therapeutic effects of personalized cancer vaccines.
Who Should Attend:
  • Cancer researchers
  • Drug discovery scientists
  • Translational research scientists
  • Clinical researchers
What You Will Learn:
  • Why neoantigens are an attractive immune target
  • Insights into cancer immunoediting process
  • Impact of immune checkpoint inhibitor research
  • Current state of cancer vaccines

BioLegend joins forces with EdiGene to provide Knockout (KO) validated antibodies

BEIJING, June 28, 2017. EdiGene Inc. announced today that BioLegend, a world renowned manufacturer of biomedical research reagents, is teaming up with EdiGene, a genome editing company, to validate its Cell Biology portfolio antibodies using EdiGene’s extensive repository of 100% knockout (KO) cell lines. BioLegend takes antibody validation very seriously and guarantees antibody specificity of over 15,000+ antibody products.

BioLegend’s Cell Biology portfolio consists of 600+ antibodies that are targeted to different cell function and structure proteins (www.biolegend.com/cell_biology). The advantage of using EdiGene’s KO cell lysates will be the accessibility of data for commonly used laboratory cell lines such as HeLa, HEK293T, and Jurkat, for these proteins.

EdiGene’s KO cell lines have been developed through the use of genome editing technologies and validated at the genomic level through PCR and Sanger sequencing techniques to ensure the accuracy and 100% knockout of target genes. The goal is to provide academia, biotech and pharmaceutical companies ready-made genome wide human KO cell lines for their research and development in antibody validation, gene function analysis, biomarker discovery and validation, drug target identification and validation, compound mechanism of action, etc.

San Diego Groundbreaking Confirms the Commitment of BioLegend® to Legendary Discovery and Building a Home for Top Talent

Groundbreaking on Phase Two of the Campus Development aims to provide a home for top talent and engage the international life science and biotech community.

San Diego, Calif. (August 3, 2017) – A new landmark is coming to Sorrento Mesa, a suburb of San Diego. BioLegend, Inc.®, the global leader in life science, continues to plan for future growth and the Hughes Marino Project Management team is proud to be part of it.

The site was originally 7.5-acres of land partially divided by the Terman Court cul-de-sac leading to  four existing tilt-up concrete buildings. The San Diego Planning Commission recently approved the vacation of Terman Court allowing the space to become part of the new BioLegend Campus.

On just over 8-acres of land, Hughes Marino Project Management and architect Delawie have worked with BioLegend to create the updated inclusive campus design. The design is equipped with a new 7-story 700-stall parking garage tucked behind the new main building that extends south along the west end of the site. At the southern end of the new main building stands the landmark 70-foot tall atrium with a pedestrian bridge that connects the atrium to the refurbished Administrative and Amenity Building.  Creative landscaping surrounds the structures to offer all team members a place to relax or informally meet outside.

The BioLegend Campus design is a fresh look compared to the previously published design. Gene Lay, CEO and Founder of BioLegend explained, “We recently completed Phase 1 and we learned a lot through that design, permitting and construction process. We took a close look at ourselves as a company, as a family, and decided to prioritize specific features that prove we value our team, encouraging collaboration between departments, and providing functional and efficient lab space.” Adding, “We want the biotech industry to recognize BioLegend and this campus as a place of legendary discovery.”

Focusing on the new main building the key feature is the massive atrium. As the focal point of the BioLegend Campus, the atrium leads the way to the upper floors of the building where labs, offices, break rooms and conference rooms strategically comingle. The lab space is laid out to maintain open floor plans structured to encourage collaboration while maintaining appropriate safety precautions. Straight, efficient lines on the inside differ from the creative office and outdoor amenity space elsewhere on the BioLegend Campus.

Standing on the top story of the main building, and looking across the BioLegend Campus the view is filled with the green roof with scattered picnic tables and bridges leading the way to the massive center circle that doubles as a lunch area during the day and event space in the evening. During inclement weather, associates can take shelter through the large bi-folding doors to the 500-person multi-purpose room situated under the green roof.

BioLegend recognizes that healthy employees make for happy employees which make for a productive workspace. Walking across the bridge to the top floor of the Administrative Building you enter creative office space.  Cross-functionality to increase efficiency between departments is critical. BioLegend understands which departments need to be adjacent to each other in order to encourage collaboration and efficiency, explained by Kim Clark, Vice President of Human Resources, “The office space is welcoming and encourages collaboration but will also offer workstations and private rooms for focused efforts.”

A BioLegend Campus wouldn’t be complete without a kitchen and a gym.  Indeed, these were the two most sought after amenities according to a survey of team members for their site wish list.  “A large portion of our team is of the Millennial generation–and we love it! They are creative and encourage us to view processes and operations in a different way. Everyone on our team works incredibly hard so the gym, kitchen, yoga rooms, game room, and other amenity spaces will encourage even more collaboration and relaxation between focused sessions,” said Gene Lay, “We want to encourage a healthy lifestyle.”

As a growing biotech company that values its family, BioLegend wanted to create an environment worthy of the best talent and a place that exudes collaboration and legendary discovery. Working with recently selected general contractor, DPR Construction, the project team and BioLegend will break ground in mid-August and work to complete the BioLegend Campus by March of 2019.

Nik Bandak is a Vice President for Hughes Marino Project Management, an award-winning California commercial real estate company specializing in project management, tenant representation and building purchases, with offices in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and Seattle.

BioLegend Joins the Resource Identification Initiative to Improve Research Reproducibility

September 23, 2016

SAN DIEGO--For years, researchers in academia and biotech have struggled to replicate published studies. Recent analysis has concluded that a significant proportion of published studies cannot be accurately reproduced, which has driven a movement to identify methods to improve reproducibility. One aspect is the ability to identify the exact source of the research reagents used in publications. BioLegend has now teamed with the Resource Identification Initiative to list BioLegend’s entire 17,000+ antibody products portfolio, with each product getting a unique RRID # (Research Resource Identifier), which will be stored at www.antibodyregistry.org.

The Resource Identification Initiative, led by Anita Bandrowski of SciCrunch, is a mission of FORCE11, a collaborative community of scholars, publishers, activists, research funders, and others seeking to improve knowledge creation and sharing. https://www.force11.org/group/resource-identification-initiative

“BioLegend has always sought to enable legendary discovery by providing quality reagents. We believe that the Resource Identification Initiative will help provide researchers with the appropriate reagents to reproduce studies and further accelerate scientific breakthroughs,” says Gene Lay, CEO of BioLegend. BioLegend’s product technical data sheets now include the RRID for easy cross-referencing with the Antibody Registry.

Cell Press, a major publisher of biology journals, has already released a new format for publishing procedures, called STAR Methods, which includes listing the RRID for reagents such as antibodies, cell lines, model organisms, chemicals, software, and more. It may be a long road before all publications adopt such measures to verify research reagents, but BioLegend is committed to being in the forefront of improving research validity and reproducibility in collaboration with the Resource Identification Initiative.

BioLegend Enters License Agreement with Sanquin for Peptide-MHC Assay Technology

June 23, 2016 11:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BioLegend announces that it has licensed from Sanquin Blood Supply Foundation a novel technology to study antigen-specific T cells. Through a collaborative effort, Sanquin's Reagents Division and The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI), both in Amsterdam, have developed an MHC-multimer technology that allows the user to conveniently prepare their own customized tetramer reagents in their laboratories, as needed. This powerful technology is now available commercially from BioLegend, with the same high quality of manufacturing, superior customer support and excellent value that customers have come to recognize from BioLegend.

Presented under the brand name Flex-T™, BioLegend currently offers biotinylated MHC/peptide monomers, with a variety of products to be added in the near future. "The Flex-T™ technology is very exciting as it allows for our customers to have more control over the reagent they want to use. By using ultraviolet radiation, the special pre-loaded peptide in the MHC molecules can be released and substituted by the researcher's peptide of interest. This facilitates the research of antigen-specific T cells by flow cytometry and other techniques, and makes immune monitoring incredibly flexible," said Gene Lay, President and CEO, BioLegend, winner of the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2016 Life Sciences Award. "Sanquin is proud that its proprietary technologies support BioLegend to make the powerful immunological reagents readily available for biomedical research," said Roel Melsert, managing director at Sanquin.

The addition of reagents to study antigen-specific T cells is an excellent match to BioLegend's current portfolio. Plans to expand the Flex-T™ platform include pre-loaded tetramers to complement the flexible, ultraviolet-labile peptide loaded monomers, tetramer assembly kits, and custom screening services, among others. The affordability and flexibility of the products also allows for the use of combinatorial color coding. "By assigning a unique two-color coding to each MHC/peptide combination it is possible to detect multiple antigen-specific T cells with a single small volume of sample. We believe this approach will enable the scientific community to achieve their goals more quickly, easily and affordably than ever before," said Gene Lay.
